Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I get a Library card?
A: Membership to the Paris Public Library is free to those who live, work, pay taxes or attend school in the surrounding area. You may apply for a library card at the library's circulation desk. A current address, phone number, and the name and number of one reference is required. Parents must assume responsibility for items borrowed by children ages 13 and younger. All records related to your registration and materials you borrow are confidential. Once you've filled out a card, we keep your record on file at the desk. All you have to do to check items out is come up to the desk and tell us your name. If you'd like to keep track of your records and renew from home, you may receive a user name and password at the library circulation desk.
Q: What are the loan periods and limits for the different types of materials in the library?
A. Books, magazines, and all other print items checkout for two weeks. VHS movies, DVD's, and Blu-Ray movies check out for one week. Each household may have four DVD's at one time and each library card may have four VHS's at one time.
Q: How do I renew my books?
A: You may now reserve and renew items with an online library account. Please contact the library staff to receive a user name and password. If you do not have Internet access at home, you can also call the library or stop by during library hours to renew your materials. Most items can be renewed twice unless there is someone waiting for that item. Items that are on hold for another patron cannot be renewed.
Q: How can I use a computer at the library?
A: The Paris Public Library offers wireless Internet access for everyone. Simply bring your wireless-enabled laptop computer to the library and access our wireless through the name "sppl." There is no time limit for use of our wireless Internet. If you do not own a laptop, the library has ten computers for public use. Just come in, sign your name and the time at the circulation desk, and hop on any free computer. There is a one hour requested time limit on the library computers.
Q: What if the Paris Public Library does not have a book I need?
A: If there's a book that you need that is not in our library's collection, you may request that book on interlibrary loan. To do this, come to the library's circulation desk and we can find the book at another library and request it for you. Generally, materials will arrive at the library in 1-2 week's time from when the request was made.
