Book List: Halloween
Do you have any plans for the big night? Trick-or-Treating? Family Halloween Party? Scary movie night with friends? Or maybe you'd rather sit in and read some spooky tales instead? Well, either way it's time for a Halloween Book List! So here's a list of books that will leave you goosebumpy and a little scared to look under the bed:
Beating Heart by A.M. Jenkins
Following his parents' divorce, seventeen-year-old Evan moves with his mother and sister into an old house where the spirit of a teenager who died there awakens and mistakes him for her long-departed lover.
The Accident by Diane Hoh
A wispy, shadowy figure appears in Megan's mirror one day begging to trade places with her for just one week. The young girl begs her to let her live again. Gradually Megan comes to realize that she must grant this request.
Jade Green by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
While living with her uncle in a house haunted by the ghost of a young woman, recently orphaned Judith Sparrow wonders if her one small transgression causes mysterious happenings.
20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill
A collection of fifteen original ghost stories by award-winning author Joe Hill, son of authors Stephen King and Tabitha King.
Pay the Piper by Jane Yolen and Adam Stemple
When Callie interviews the band, Brass Rat, for her school newspaper, her feelings are ambivalent, but when all the children of Northampton begin to disappear on Halloween, she knows where the dangerous search must begin.
All Hallows Eve: Thirteen Stories by Vivian Vande Velde
Presents thirteen tales of Halloween horrors, including ghosts, vampires, and pranks gone awry.
All the Lovely Bad Ones by Mary Downing Hahn
Travis and his sister Corey decide to boost business at their grandmother's Vermont inn by staging a few "hauntings" that soon draw tourists from across the country, but when their antics awaken a dark force, they must find a way to put to rest the ghosts they have disturbed.
The Old Willis Place by Mary Downing Hahn
Tired of the rules that have bound them ever since "the bad thing happened," twelve-year-old Diana ignores her brother's warnings and befriends the daughter of the new caretaker, setting in motion events that lead to the release of the spirit of an evil, crazy woman who once ruled the old Willis place.
Shadowed Summer by Saundra Mitchell
In the small town of Ondine, Louisiana, fourteen-year-old Iris uncovers family secrets when she conjures up the ghost of a boy missing for decades and decides to solve the mystery of his disappearance.

Spooky Bookish Facts
It's that time of year! Time for apple cider and horror novels. I just came across this list from Book Riot of creepy bookish trivia.
2. While books bound with human skin can be found in collections in several libraries, the Boston Athanaeum holds one of the few books bound with the skin of its author. While imprisoned, a highwayman wrote of his life, but could not afford to have it bound. Upon his death, he requested his skin be used and the memoir gifted to the man who had originally caught him.
4. Virginia Poe, late wife of Edgar Allen Poe, startled the family one night while singing and playing the piano. During that time, her lungs began to hemorrhage from her Tuberculosis and she started bleeding from the mouth.
12. Though it may seem like an odd ritual now, visiting the corpse of a loved (complete with hugging) was a common practice in the 19th century. After his wife died at a young age, Ralph Waldo Emerson made it a routine to have her coffin opened every morning so he could embrace her corpse. This carried on for a year.
Head over to Book Riot for the complete list!

Spoilers as Punishment
So I just read an article that there's this math teacher in Belgium who keeps his students in line by threatening them with Game of Thrones spoilers. The Telegraph wrote "Asking his students which of them watched the fantasy drama, the majority raised their hands, to which the teacher responded: “Well, I’ve read all the books. If there is too much noise, I will write the names of the dead on the board.” Reported in the Belgian newspaper, the teacher continued: “They [the dead] are enough to fill the whole year and I can even describe how they die.”
Apparently he has only needed to follow through on his threat once. Ice cold!

Geek Zodiac
Check out this Geek Zodiac! Apparently, I am an Alien, which is "+ Intelligent. Technophile. Diplomatic. - Suspicious. Secretive. Inscrutable." And this was determined according to prominent works that came out in certain years. Mine originated from 1938 when Orson Wells radio broadcasted H.G. Well's book The War of the Worlds and everyone got freaked out. Where do you fall?

LEGO X-Men
So, LEGO has really been killing it lately. Have you seen the Simpsons LEGO set?! They haven't made an X-Men set yet, but LEGO Cuusoo user DarthKy has shown the X-Men possibilities by building Xavier’s Institute for Higher Learning. The giant X-Mansion is built to fold out and is four stories tall. DarthKy wants to include 45 mini-figures and locations like the Danger Room and Cerebro. Let's hope it gets made!

Redheads in Literature
I had never thought about it before, but a lot of my favorite literary characters (like, EVER) have been redheads, which is interesting since such a low percentage of the general population are red-haired.
Young Adult author Alison Cherry has put together a great list of the best fictional redheads. "Perhaps my favorite thing about the group of characters listed below is that it shows just how different redheads can be. Underneath those fiery locks and freckles, there are introverts and extroverts, firecrackers and daydreamers, badasses and sweethearts."Who is your favorite red-haired literary character?

Travelling Through Books
Sometimes we need to be reminded of one of the simplest and most powerful abilities of a book. When we are sick in bed or financially unable to explore the world, anyone can always escape to any time or place through books. I would love to have this framed so that I can always remember the simplest magic of books.

So, I don't know if it's because I love books and cats, or if it's a real phenomenon, but it seems as though there is an abundance of photos and gifs on the internet of cats with books. Perhaps they secretly can read? I'd like to think so.

Since the final Hobbit movie came out, I've been feeling such a lack. No more Tolkein to look forward to! Even though I didn't love the last movie, it's "still Middle Earth to me." What franchise have you been most sad to see end?

How to Avoid Cracking the Spine of a Book
Lately I've been OBSESSED with Booktube. There's just something so inspiring about listening to other people talk about their book loves. Whenever I am in a reading slump, I just listen to Jean talk about the Argonautica or head over to BookRiot. And so often, you can find helpful tips on Booktube, like how to read a book without cracking the spine.

Kansas State Can Prosecute Teachers
So, I just read an article that the "Kansas Senate passes bill easing prosecution of teachers for distributing 'harmful material'." It is intended to be protecting kids from "pornographic material," but educators in Kansas attest that this is because of a sex-ed poster in a classroom. And now, senators are calling books by Toni Morrison "pornographic." I hope this isn't a sign of things to come.
What are your thoughts?

New Veronica Roth Books!
Have you heard!? It was just recently announced that there will be a new Veronica Roth duology. As I am sure you are aware, Veronica Roth is the author behind the hugely popular Divergent trilogy. The new two-book set is to be released in 2017 and 2018. According to The Guardian the new books are going to be Star Wars-ish. I don't even know what that could realistically mean for her books, but I am excited regardless.
What do you think? Which author do you wish would come out with something new?

Reading Skillz
So it's a new year, and with the new year, I am sure you made some resolutions. Hopefully they are the bookish type! I will be participating in a few reading challenges myself. But I stumbled across this article, I thought you would enjoy. It is 7 Reading Hacks to Improve Your Literary Skills. Some of them are quite helpful and interesting, but then some... Don't read in bed?! Read aloud, or mouth along?! Some of these might take a bit of work....

Peanuts = The Smiths?
So I love Charles Schulz's Peanuts strip. I am actually in the midst of reading through all the collected strips that are currently coming out in two year volumes. And I also happen to love the 1980's Manchester, England-born band "The Smiths." But I NEVER made the connection between Morrissey's lyrics and the strips dark and existential themes.
Brava to the Oakland-based graphic designer Lauren LoPrete who began the Tumblr account named “This Charming Charlie” where she inserts Smiths lyrics into Peanuts panels. And they are seamless, my friends. Do you like Peanuts or The Smiths? What's your favorite newspaper strip?
